On Racism

Skin color─My attitude toward racism based on skin color is as follows. Some folks have brown hair; others’ hair is red, blond, or black. Some folks have blue eyes; others’ eyes are green, brown, or hazel. Some folks have light-colored skin; others have brown skin; still others have even darker skin (some call it “black”). I’m an educator. I’m concerned with my students’ brains (their intellect). I don’t know or care about its color. I feel the same way about skin color. Judging folks based on their skin color makes about as much sense as judging them based on their hair color or eye color. We are all human beings (we all have feelings!), and we should treat each other kindly and respectfully. The way many black folks have been treated in this country (like segregated schools, water fountains, restrooms, and neighborhoods) is disgraceful! I have felt this way about the subject for as long as I can remember.

Antisemitism─I have learned more from Albert Einstein than from anyone else, and I have written a book titled “Einstein─The Man and His Thoughts”. I respect Einstein tremendously. His Jewish heritage is to me utterly irrelevant. That the German people, including some Nobel Laureates (like the Nazi Philipp Lenard), let Hitler slaughter some 6 million Jews (men, women, and children including 15-year-old Anne Frank, her sister Margot, and their mother) boggles my mind.

Anti-Asians─Some folks right here in the U. S. A. discriminate against Asians. For several years, I taught graduate-level courses at UCLA. I had students from many countries, including Isreal and China. For some 10 years after she graduated, one of my Asian students sent me every Christmas a beautiful card containing a nice personal note. She was the only one of my students to do so! She (a superb student) went to work for Ford Motor Co. I remember her fondly!
